Privacy and cookies
This website keeps simple statistics about its visits, to see which papers, datasets and pages people find useful and to improve the site. It shows no advertising, uses no third-party trackers, and sells or shares nothing.
Your choice
Your visits are counted in this browser.
The choice is remembered in this browser only. Choosing “Don’t count my visits” also deletes the visit you are on now. The switch needs JavaScript; with JavaScript off, nothing is recorded at all.
What is recorded
- The pages you view, how long each one is on screen, and how far down you scroll.
- The site or link that sent you here, if your browser passes it on.
- Clicks on downloads (papers, slides, data and code), on links to other sites, on the email address, and on “Copy BibTeX”.
- Your browser, operating system and type of device, your screen and window size, your language and your time zone.
- Your IP address, and from it the approximate city, region and country, the network provider, and whether the address belongs to a VPN, a proxy or a data centre. This is used to tell people from automated crawlers.
Cookies and browser storage
The site sets no cookies of its own. It keeps two small items in your browser’s local storage:
sp-vid: a random number, so that a return visit can be told apart from a new visitor. It is not linked to your name or anything else about you.sp-stats: your answer to the notice, so that it is not shown again.
You can delete them at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser.
Who sees it, and for how long
The statistics are stored on the server that hosts this website and can be seen only by the site owner, on a password-protected page. To find where an IP address is, it is sent once to proxycheck.io, an IP-lookup service; the answer is kept for 30 days. Visits are deleted after 13 months.
The statistics are kept because the site owner has a legitimate interest in knowing how the site is used, and you can object at any time with the switch above.
Your rights and contact
You can ask what is held about your visits, ask for it to be deleted, or object to it, by emailing s.pybis@mmu.ac.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
